Docker's Nicknames

In an ambitious attempt to uncover history and intermingle my characters in our past, I'm researching the nicknames of Avonmouth and Bristol Harbour Dockers. I have been fortunate enough to be able to closely work with Mshed Museum and gain access to their archives, but can you help further?

Inspired by the Docks Heritage event held in Bristol, where history comes alive along the quayside from Underfall Yard to Mshed, the electric cranes, an iconic symbol of Bristol after the Clifton Suspension Bridge, were alive and moving cargo hinting back to Bristol's illustrious and industrious rich past. I even got to talk to Mr Brunel himself, from the SS Great Britain this year too (2022).

A tale not to be forgotten; the comradeship and community of the Bristol Dockers. The research is incomplete but maybe you can help. Did you or your family work at the Docks? Were they Tin Gods or hard grafters? Maybe even skippers, locomotive engine men or lorry drivers who had a hand in the Guinness, oranges and exotic imports or local exports out of Bristol? Even better, did they have a nickname?
